Operational snapshot: Venezuela earthquake
Overview
On 24 June, two high-magnitude earthquakes struck the north-central region of Venezuela, causing more than 5,000 deaths, injuring over 16,000 people, and leaving thousands displaced after losing their homes and access to essential services.
To support affected communities and humanitarian actors on the ground, UNHRD, through its hub in Panama, mobilized 190.5 MT of prepositioned relief items and logistics equipment on behalf of 11 partners. Cargo dispatched from UNHRD Panama included medicines, medical equipment, dignity kits, generators, mobile storage units and humanitarian personnel kits. This operation is estimated to have reached over 47,000 beneficiaries.
Humanitarian Air Charters from Panama to Venezuela
The European Commission Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) generously funded and activated two charter flights operated by UNHRD from Panama to Venezuela, enabling 7 partners to mobilize 76.2MT prepositioned relief items.
Part of the logistics equipment mobilized (37 MT) has been transported through a charter flight coordinated with WFP Aviation and the WFP Venezuela Country Office. These items are expected to strengthen operational capacity on the ground.
